How to Sharpen Tungsten for TIG Welding in 6 Steps

The tungsten electrode is one of the most critical parts of any TIG welding setup. After all, it is the tungsten electrode that transmits the arc from the welder to the metal. If your electrode isn’t set up correctly, you can’t get a clean, strong weld. For the best performance of the welding arc, the electrode is usually sharpened before welding.

TIG Welding (GTAW) Electrodes welding & NDT

In GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) also known as TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas welding), a non consumable electrode (made up of Tungsten) is used. Tungsten is preferred due to high its high melting point (approximately 3,410 0 C) and high hardness. Either pure tungsten is used as electrode or it can be alloyed with other elements.

Selection and Preparation Guide for Tungsten Electrodes

Tungsten is a rare metallic element used for manufacturing TIG (or GTAW) electrodes. The TIG process relies on tungsten’s hardness and high temperature resistance to carry the welding current to the arc, as it has the highest melting point of any metal (3,410 degrees Celsius).

High Quality Pre Ground Tungsten Welding Electrodes

Pre ground TIG welding tungsten electrodes are similar to their unsharpened counterparts in that they provide a clean, high quality weld, while reducing preparation time and variability. Precision CNC machined tungsten rods exhibit a strict tip tolerance resulting in higher weld consistency, improved arc quality, and longer electrode life. They are preferred in mechanized TIG welding, plasma welding, pipe

Tungsten Electrode Tips Welding Tips and Tricks TIG

TIG welding thin sheet metal with a 3/32" (2.4mm) tungsten electrode. This might be obvious to you but for tig welding really thin metal, its best to taper the electrode like a needle. You also definitely dont want any grinding marks running sideways. ( for welding at high amps, those sideways scratches dont make that much difference)
